Slayin’

Joshua 1:9, “This is my command — be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” is the verse that I want to leave with you today. Courage is as important in our daily life as our heartbeat. I think of David and Goliath, a story we have all heard a million times if we have grown up in the church. But something struck me a bit differently when I was thinking about that story. David didn’t ever mention how big Goliath was or how much armor he was wearing. He didn’t care. His confidence was in how big God is, how big His faithfulness is, and how the armor of God is the strongest armor. The world seems a bit fear-filled these days. I know there are a lot of nights I go to bed with fear on my heart after reading the latest headlines, or after hard conversations I had that day, or the unknowns of child-rearing, or whether we loved in the right ways that day. But I’m trying to wake up with the confidence like David. I don’t want to care how big the giants are going to be that day. There will always be giants for us to slay. But let us approach them with the confidence of David- confidence in how big our God is. With His armor and His strength, we can banish those fears from our life. Let us hear Joshua 1:9 again: “This is my command — be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” So my prayer for you is that you will know, with the confidence of David, that our God is with you wherever you go- at your job, in your marriage, in your friendships, with the stranger at the protest, with your children, in our past, present, and future. He is bigger than any giant we face. So let us grab our rocks and get to slaying.
